Two Week Intensive Contemporary Machine Knitting Course

July 8th- July 20th
August 12th- August 23rd

This course is suitable for absolute beginners or those with some prior knowledge of machine knitting.

The structure of the course is underpinned with an emphasis on design and awareness of current trends within knitwear practice. Technical demonstrations are given throughout each week with opportunities for one to one tuition where needed.

Week One - The Basics and Patterning

• Casting on and off, including interesting trims and hems
• Fully fashioning and shaping techniques

This week we will introduce you to the many creative ways in which you can utilise pattern and texture on the knitting machine. There will be continued emphasis on contemporary design to inspire your techniques and knit swatches.

The Techniques Explored will Include:

• Fairisle
• Tuck stitch
• Plating
• Weaving

Week Two - Three Dimensional Structures & Introduction to Calculating Knitting for Garments

This weeks lessons will be focused towards three dimensional knit structures. You will develop techniques to create volume and form within your knit fabrics. You will utilise the many technical capabilities enabled by using the holding cams.

The week will include:

• Learning how to create volume with the holding cams.
• Applying the technique to the body form.
• Experimentation with yarn, colour and structure.

• Calculating a tension swatch accurately
